LTC Online Texas License to Carry

About this course

Course Synopsis : This course was created by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). It is administered by 4Ward Defense, LLC- a DPS Accredited Online LTC Course Provider- used in accordance with the requirements of Texas Government Code §411.188.

The Texas LTC has 2 certification steps- Part 1 is this online class, and Part 2 is your Shooting Proficiency Exam. This is Part 1, the Online Class portion.

Students must still complete the Shooting Proficiency Exam after completion of this course, which can be found here

Additionally, if you are not in the Houston area, we do have affiliate Instructors in your local area that we can contact you with to complete your shooting portion of your LTC Test.

This course is designed for a minimum of 4 hours, followed by online examination and the proficiency demonstration mentioned above. Material is provided in modules with specific amounts of time allotted for each module. Student may complete the lessons at their leisure, but MUST complete each section prior to taking the Final Exam. This course software maintains a record of how long a student watches each video, and the skipping of any section may result in the withholding of any Certification of Class Completion until the students completes all appropriate Lessons.

Course objective: The overall objective of this course is to educate students on the responsibilities and laws applicable to handgun license holders. Specific objectives are outlined at the beginning of each training module.

Course Structure

Module 1: LAWS THAT RELATE TO WEAPONS AND THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE

This section is designed to provide students with general information regarding the laws related to use of weapons and to the use of deadly force. Each scenario is different and these laws are subject to interpretation.

PART A: LAWS THAT RELATE TO CARRYING A HANDGUN

This lesson will cover topics that relate to the laws for carrying a handgun.

Student Objectives:

  1. Identify places where a handgun may/may not be carried by a license holder
  2. Identify the types of signs that may apply to license holders including 51%, 30.06 and 30.07 sign
  3. State the possible outcomes for carrying a handgun while intoxicated
  4. Know and understand how reciprocity and unilateral agreements function and know resources available to determine which states are reciprocal/unilateral

PART B: LAWS THAT RELATE TO THE USE OF FORCE AND DEADLY FORCE

This lesson will cover use of force laws.

Objectives:

  1.  Be familiar with the laws in Penal Code Chapter 9 related to LTC and the use of force
  2.  Know and understand the following terms: reasonable & necessity
  3.  Understand when the use of deadly force can be justified
  4.  Understand the considerations for license holders during interactions with law enforcement

Module 2: HANDGUN USE AND SAFETY, INCLUDING THE USE OF RESTRAINT HOLSTERS

This module is designed to provide students with general information regarding basic operations of a handgun- including use of restraint holsters, methods to ensure the secure carrying of openly carried handguns and overall safety considerations.

Student Objectives:

  1. Be familiar with the basic safety rules related to handguns.
  2. Be familiar with the basic operation of a handgun.
  3. Be familiar with the use of holsters and restraints

HANDGUN SAFETY RULES, SAFE OPERATION OF HANDGUN & USE OF RESTRAINT HOLSTERS

This lesson is designed to provide students with general information regarding basic operations of a handgun including use of restraint holsters and methods to ensure the secure carrying of openly carried handguns and overall safety considerations. This lesson is not designed to teach students how to shoot, but is an overview of the skills related to marksmanship with an emphasis on safety.

Module 3: NON-VIOLENT DISPUTE RESOLUTION

This module is designed to inform students of different methods to recognize, avoid and diffuse conflict situations.

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS, COMMUNICATION TECHNIQUES & EGO STATE THEORY

This module is designed to inform students of different methods to recognize, avoid and diffuse conflict situations. Emphasis should be placed on finding ways to resolve conflicts in a non-violent manner. Emphasis is also placed on identifying and avoiding situations which could escalate into the use of deadly force. It is important for the student to understand that learning this material does not make the student an expert on resolving volatile situations.

Student Objectives:

  1. Define and understand situational awareness
  2. Identify effective communication skills
  3. Identify barriers that prevent effective communication skills
  4. Identify and understand the three ego states

Module 4: PROPER STORAGE PRACTICES FOR HANDGUNS

This module covers the various options on how to store a handgun safely with a focus on how to prevent access to the handgun by others, with specific emphasis on storage practices that eliminate the possibility of accidental injury to a child.

“SAFE STORAGE”, ACCESSIBILITY, SECURITY, AND LAWS THAT RELATE TO SAFE STORAGE

This lesson covers the various options on how to store a handgun safely with a focus on how to prevent access to the handgun by others. A main component of this lesson is to address accessibility versus safety. It also includes information related to the laws and the penalties for making a firearm accessible to a child.

Student Objectives:

  1. Identify the importance of safe storage of a handgun
  2. Identify types of storage options available
  3. Know and understand the penalties for making a firearm accessible to a child
  4. Know and understand the responsibility and consequences when handguns are made available to anyone other than those who should have access.

Module 5: EXAM

25 Question Exam. Applicants need a passing score of 70% to unlock their Certificate of Qualification.
